I made this from Chef Damodaran’s cook book.

Rail Chutney


1. Urud Dal – 1/2 cup

2. Coconut – 1/4 cup

3. Tamarind – little

4. Asafoetida

5. Red chillies –  2

6. Salt

Method of preparation:

1. In a kadai, with little oil, roast urud dal till it turns red.

2. Add red chillies and coconut.

3. Add tamarind, asafoetida and salt.

4. Remove from flame and grind with little water.

5. Rail chutney is ready and can be served with idlies/dosas/ upma.
